At the UN Climate Change Conference in Bali in 2007, Oxfam had two primary objectives: first, to reinforce the message that human beings were already suffering as a result of climate change and, second, to pressure politicians to deliver financial support and a deal to cut emissions.
In the tense final three days of the conference, we issued delegates with a calendar featuring photographs of people whose lives were affected by climate change. Each person held a sign declaring,“It’s up to U Now”.
We hoped that the calendar would remind politicians daily of their personal and national responsibility as members of the UN to act fast and save communities already affected by severe climate change.
We reinforced the message at the conference by printing life-size versions of the photographs which lined the narrow passageway to the entrance to the conference centre, forcing delegates to consider them as they lined up to enter the centre.The last banner was simply a mirror with the line,‘It’s up to U Now’ written below.
